After I’ve finished this, I’ll compare iA’s estimate with Medium’s and let you know what I find (see below). IA Writer also provides text statistics as you write, including sentence, word and character counts, and it estimates read time much like Medium does. It’s got full-screen mode, focus mode, and typewriter mode, and I’m using all of these to type this now, and it’s nice! It’s the app I’ve been using to type this post so far, and it’s a fairly typical example of your minimalist Mac writing app, of which there are many, most (if not all) of which center around the MultiMarkdown syntax. Since it’s a popular app and was recently upgraded to version 3.0, let’s take a look at iA Writer first. IA Writer 3.0 with syntax analysis set to highlight adverbs The way of Zen It’s also overkill if you mostly do short-form writing. Nonetheless, there is a learning curve, so the tool doesn’t quite get out of the way of creativity like some of the more minimalist apps do. We’ll probably also want to post to our blogs. Plus, if we’re serious about our writing, we probably aren’t going to just want to post everything to Medium and only to Medium. But like any app, it has it’s limitations. Of course, as Medium writers, we also have to deal with Medium’s draft editor, which is a perfectly fine, distraction-free editor and is one of the things we love so much about Medium in the first place. I’ve tried so many different writing apps over the years, that I’m not even sure which is the best one for my own particular writing needs, so I thought now it was about time to figure it out.
